Environmental Advantage
Aluminum is the green choice for automotive materials. It’s proven to safely lighten vehicles for better fuel economy and reduced green house emissions. To counter global warming, By 2020 [verify], the aluminum industry worldwide is expected to be green house gas neutral (by reducing more end use C02 emissions from transportation products, than is created during the production process).
Here are some other important environmental advantages that aluminum provides:
- A 6 to 8 percent fuel savings can be realized for every 10 percent reduction in weight from substituting aluminum for steel.
- Each pound of aluminum replacing two pounds of iron or steel can save a new 20 pounds of CO2 equivalents over the typical lifetime of a vehicle. This is key since increased CO2 levels are commonly associated with global warming.
- Nearly 90 percent of automotive aluminum is currently recovered and recycled.
- Recycling aluminum saves nearly 95 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) associated with primary aluminum production and requires only about 5 percent of the energy - a distinct advantage since nearly 70 percent of aluminum used on today's vehicles is sourced from recycled metal.
